Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.
The Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actor, whose filmography featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. Her passing was announced via an announcement by her daughter, award-winning actress her daughter Laura Dern.
Dern, who appeared with her mother in a number of films such as Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero and my precious gift as a mother”, writing that she was present when she passed.
“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist as well as caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were fortunate to know her. She is now with the angels.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
The start of her career featured small roles in TV shows such as The Fugitive and that decade featured her performing alongside actor Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she appeared alongside Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
Subsequent Years
In the 1980s, she was seen in crime thriller the movie Black Widow plus humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining the sitcom Alice, a comedy program based on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
During the next ten years, she earned a further best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mom of her real-life daughter the character played by Dern. The following year she was awarded another nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose that also featured Dern.
“This was the film that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew us to England for a premiere and an event in our honor,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”
The 1990s also saw roles in comedy The Cemetery Club bringing her back with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Dern’s mother again. The decade also brought her Emmy nominations for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
Collaborations with Daughter
She persisted in performing with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and White’s dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.
Her more recent television parts featured Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
Filmmaking Ventures
She also authored and oversaw the comedy the movie Mrs Munck which starred her and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. In fact, I’m the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Family Ties
She happened to be the third cousin of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.
Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and advised she only had half a year left but made a full recovery after her daughter shifted her to a different hospital.
“Should you harness your suffering and not let it back up like a sore or something, instead use it to discover, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are winning,” Ladd remarked.
