According to a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American military executed a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”

Context and Prior Actions

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Pressure

The administration has faced increasing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
