British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
