A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.
We are verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
