Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house close to Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who ran away after the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location displayed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion included 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed reporters, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
