'Living a Nightmare': Relatives of Missing Young People Desperately Seek News After Ski Resort Fire
The loved ones of teens lost after a deadly inferno at a bar in a Swiss winter destination are facing an excruciating period of uncertainty for answers and appealing for clues about their family members via social media.
The fire devastated the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Circulated images reveal the ceiling catching alight as bottles with sparklers are held aloft.
Emergency services have stated that it could take an extended period to identify the victims of the fire, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and wounded another scores more. Authorities stated on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work continuing to locate the remaining few.
In the interim, loved ones have been using social media to plead for any news about their loved ones who were at the bar that fateful night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are currently unknown, according to an public plea from his parent.
The resident of Lutry near the city, informed a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but could not find him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. Words cannot describe it," she told the paper.
She continued that some of his friends had been located with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "There are no words; they went through an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's foreign ministry has confirmed that a number of of its citizens have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, who hailed from Genoa but now living in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has said that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the tragedy, honoring a "young athlete who carried with him passion and authentic values."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is still pending.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is likewise among the missing. His parent told reporters that he had been on holiday but had gone out with friends and ended up at the venue.
"A close friend informed me they fled after the fire erupted and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she explained, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers said, "I've always been struck by his good nature and smile, combined with great responsibility. Often offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to sources.
Her brother has published an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no news" regarding the 15-year-old or the three friends she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her other nation say they are closely watching the situation.
