The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison built from the past of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the cavern was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
