Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
